Too Sick to Blog

I didn’t write a blog post yesterday. I’m not going to write one today, either.

(What do you mean I am? Go away, you.)

There’s something about existing in a household full of sick people turns my creativity into an impossibility. Little Brother and I are recovering from a sore throats and minor chest infections (he’s almost better now), and my husband and Big Brother have been suffering with a tummy bug that sees them running back and forth to the bathroom every half hour or so.

Remember those days when you were kind of secretly pleased when you had a touch of flu, because you could call in sick to work, cuddle up under a blanket and spend a couple of days reading books, eating whatever you could get your stomach to accept (preferably salt and vinegar chips), and drinking lemonade?

Yeah, me too. *sigh* I really miss those days.

Instead of resting and recovering, I’m currently trapped in a continuing cycle of coughing, dispensing medicine, washing clothes stained with i-don’t-want-to-think-about-it, cleaning toilets, preparing food that’s only going to come out the other end in record time anyway, trying (and failing) to sleep, and generally feeling sick and tired of the whole darn thing.

Yeah, I said “darn”. That’s just how I roll.

Sick kids are the worst. On one hand, you feel terrible that they’re upset and sad and hurting and there’s nothing you can do about it. On the other, you just wish they’d stop being irritable and annoying and spewing icky things from both ends (that you have to clean up). What, you’ve never experienced what it’s like to have sick kids? Well, I could tell you all about it. Or I could just step back and point you in the direction of my friend Bridget’s craptastic experience. (This is my favourite sick child story of all time.)

But seriously, do not read it if you’re eating. Or you’re likely to eat at some point in the future. You’ve been warned.

(Come on, you know you’re curious now.)

So, since I have nothing witty of my own to say today, I’d like to leave you with a quote from my son.

While sitting on the toilet during yet another bout of explosive diarrhea: “Why, Mummy? Why do these things always happen in my life?”

Share a story of your kids being sick. Or, even better, tell me a joke. Everyone likes a good joke when they’re under the weather.
